SMU Summer Survival Guide

As we officially kick off the summer outdoor swim season, we want to provide detailed information regarding the SMU Practice schedule, parking, etiquette and more!  This is your summer survival guide to to a successful practice season! 


SMU is our most popular location, especially during the summer.  Please adhere to proper pool etiquette and be mindful of others in your lane.  Please take a moment to review the Practice Etiquette information by Jim Montogomery.  

As a reminder, please do not enter the pool until a coach is on deck.  
We swim rain or shine, but if there is lightning - Practice is Cancelled!


Distance Swim Training:  Workouts designed to improve technique and build endurance by increasing the length of the intervals. The better your stroke technique, the fewer strokes you need to reach your destination.  These workouts are excellent for those training for triathlons and open water swim competitions.

Sprint Swim Training: These weekly practices are speed driven workouts.  Sprint workouts are an essential component of swim training for all competitive swimmers and swimmers who simply want to improve their fitness level.  Sprint training includes longer recovery periods between sets.  

Open Water Training: Each month, DAM offers an open water simulated practice for those who are training for an open water swim event.  The lane dividers are removed and buoys are set up to simulate an open water environment similar to a lake or ocean.

5:15am-7:00am.  This is a split practice that includes a cool down /warm up at 6am.

Tuesday & Thursday

6:30am & 10:30am

8:00am is a dedicated Distance practice.  9:00am is regular practice.


Wednesday evenings are Sprint Practices
Tuesday & Thursday evenings are Distance Practices

May 12-July 25:  Monday-Friday:  7:15pm
July 28:  Evening practices change back to 6:30pm


Saturday, May 17:  No 10:30am practice due to commencement.

Open Water Practices Events: Thursday Evenings - June 19, July 24, August 21

Holidays - No Evening Practices on Monday, May 26 (Memorial Day) and Friday,  4th of July, Monday, September 1 (Labor Day)

Red Eye Breakfast:  Saturday, May 31 & Saturday, July 19 - 7:30-8:30am.  Join Jim & Bobby for a pancake breakfast following the 6:30am practice.

August: Be aware that students begin their return to school around the 3rd week of August.  Parking is strictly enforced, and campus police are more diligent in pursuing traffic violations (speeding, etc) as the students return.  See parking information below.  


Showers/Locker rooms:  Due to the closing of the Perkins Natatorium, showers and locker rooms are no longer available. The outdoor pool has a shower head on deck and restrooms only.  At this time, there are no plans to put up temporary facilities.  Please make sure you keep personal items locked in your car.  It is important to remember to remove your belongings immediately after practice - if no other activities are going on after practice, the pool will be locked.  

Parking: Parking is a bit relaxed during the summer months.  During the summer, with the students gone on break, feel free to park in the lot on the east side of the outdoor pool or on the street. Parking Map.   Or you may park in the Binkley Garage - but you must have a permit!  Click here to order a parking permit  - $12 (Valid until September 30, 2014).  Do not park in reserved spots - YOU MAY BE TOWED!
