Laurie Dunlap is from Dallas and started swimming at the age of 25 with Lone Star Masters for fitness at SMU. She quickly learned to love the sport of swimming, especially open water swimming and has never looked back. Even though her first trip to Maui in 1991 to swim the Maui Channel didn’t go so well due to very rough currents, she didn’t give up on learning to open water swim. She has traveled to Grand Cayman, Barbados, Hawaii and Santa Cruz, California for open water events. She met her husband, Carl Dunlap, at the SMU pool over 25 years ago and they have a daughter who swam competitively from age 9 to 18. Laurie was a very active swim team mom, learning to run meets and do all sorts of volunteer jobs. Laurie is active in the North Texas Local Masters Swim Committee where she serves as the Sanctions Chairman, has a USMS Adult Learn To Swim teaching certification and has worked in the Dallas Aquatic Masters office since 1999.
