DAM Member: US Navy Commander, B Emanuel gets his water fix by swimming
Brandon Emanuel, who goes by B, has been swimming with DAM since arriving in Dallas as an active-duty Naval Flight Officer in 2003. "I'm an average swimmer at best", says B. "I'm essentially a Division 3 water polo player who happens to have joined a masters team". Although he did swim in high school and college, water polo was his primary sport. "When I got to Dallas, I really missed the water", says B who grew up in coastal New England and lived in Hawaii for five years. "DAM has been a great way for me to get at least a bit of a water fix while living in Texas".
After resigning his active-duty commission in 2004 to pursue a career as a test engineer, B chose to remain a Naval Reserve Officer and was mobilized back to active-duty in August 2009. A US Navy Commander, he was assigned to United States Forces--Iraq as the Operations Security Program Manager and also served as Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance Liaison Officer to headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq.
After 14-months away, B was reunited with his wife Jennifer and their 6-month old daughter Beatrice. "It's been tough getting back to 'normal' life...but DAM has helped to restore some of that normalcy. My DAM friends and coaches really supported me while I was deployed. It's much more than a swim team--it's a family".
